My next guest interview is with....
Hello everyone. I am excited to announce that my next guest on the podcast is with Dr. Aristotle Papanikolaou, Professor of Theology at Fordham University.
We will be discussing Orthodoxy and liberal democracy which is the focus of his book The Mystical as Political: Democracy and Non-Radical Orthodoxy.
“Papanikolaou hopes to forge a non-radical Orthodox political theology that extends beyond a reflexive opposition to the West and a nostalgic return to a Byzantine-like unified political-religious culture. His exploration is prompted by two trends: the fall of communism in traditionally Orthodox countries has revealed an unpreparedness on the part of Orthodox Christianity to address the question of political theology in a way that is consistent with its core axiom of theosis; and recent Christian political theology, some of it evoking the notion of “deification,” has been critical of liberal democracy, implying a mutual incompatibility between a Christian worldview and that of modern liberal democracy.” Book Description
While to some of you this choice my seem out of place but Hearth of Hellenism is dedicated to all things Greek, ancient to modern and everything in between. This includes topics such as east Roman (Byzantine) history and Orthodoxy as well. This large range and scope will allow people who normally are interested in ancient Greek things to have a chance to also learn about the rest of our history and experiences.
As a Greek polytheist, having the chance to interview a Greek Orthodox theologian should be fun and indeed rare!
